Our story

Northlight started in 2014 with a second-hand one kilo sample roaster, a garage that never quite lost the smell, and a stubborn conviction that the coffee sold locally could be a great deal better.

Twelve years later we roast on a twelve kilo drum at the back of the Mill Lane café. Most weeks that is somewhere between three and four hundred kilos, which is small by any commercial measure and exactly the size we want to stay.

We buy the majority of our green coffee on direct contracts, pay before harvest, and publish what we paid on the back of every bag. It makes for awkward reading occasionally. It also keeps us honest.
